Seasons/Availability
Vidalia® onions are available mid-spring through late summer.
Selection and Storage
When selecting Vidalia® onions, look for bulbs that are firm, have a smooth skin, and are free from blemishes. Avoid onions that have soft or wet spots as this indicates decay. Store Vidalia® onions in the refrigerator in a paper bag for up to two months. Do not store them with other produce items since their flavor can be affected by strong-smelling vegetables such as garlic or potatoes. For best results, use Vidalia® onions within one week of purchasing them.
Preparation
Vidalia® onions can be eaten raw as they provide a milder and sweeter flavor compared to other varieties of onion. They can also be cooked to tenderize the texture and can be added to salads, sandwiches, soups, or stews for flavor. Due to their high water content, Vidalia® onions caramelize quickly and evenly when cooked.
Nutritional Value
Vidalia® onions are a good source of several essential vitamins and minerals including dietary fiber, vitamin C, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and manganese. They also contain quercetin which is an antioxidant compound that helps protect the body from damage-causing free radicals. Eating Vidalia® onions may help reduce inflammation in the body as well as lower cholesterol levels. The mild sweetness of Vidalia® onions makes them a great addition to any meal plan.
