Seasons/Availability

Thai Basil is available year-round.

Selection

When selecting Thai Basil, look for vibrant green leaves that are free of blemishes or browning. The stems should be firm and not wilted.

Storage

To store Thai Basil, wrap the unwashed herb bunch in a slightly damp paper towel and place in a loosely sealed plastic bag. Store in the refrigerator where it will keep fresh for up to seven days. If you would like to freeze the herbs, blanch the leaves first then place them into an airtight container or resealable bag before freezing. When ready to use, thaw at room temperature and pat dry with paper towels before using.

Preparation/Serving Suggestions

Thai basil has a strong flavor and aroma, so it’s best to add it near the end of cooking. Whole leaves can be added to salads, sandwiches, stir-fries, and noodle dishes for flavor and texture. The herb is also commonly used to make sauces like Thai green curry paste or pesto. If you plan on using the flowers in cooking, pick them off the stem first as they tend to have a bitter taste. Dried Thai basil may also be available in some markets; however its flavor will be much weaker than fresh herbs.

Nutritional Value

Thai Basil is an excellent source of vitamin K and contains vitamins A and C as well as folate, manganese, calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. It also provides dietary fiber.
