Hydro Bibb lettuce is botanically classified as Lactuca sativa and is a type of butterhead lettuce. It was first introduced to the United States in 1774, making it one of the oldest varieties still being cultivated today. The name “Boston” refers to its origin of introduction, rather than cultivation or production.

Nutritional Value

Hydro Bibb lettuce offers some nutritional benefits like an abundance of vitamins such as Vitamin A, Vitamin K and folate; minerals like potassium; and dietary fiber. In addition, Hydro Bibb lettuce contains antioxidants which make it a powerhouse vegetable for health and wellness.

Applications

Hydro Bibb lettuce can be used both raw and cooked in a variety of applications. The leaves can be served as an edible wrap for fillings like meats, cheeses or grains. It is commonly used on salads, sandwiches and wraps. When cooked, Hydro Bibb lettuce retains its shape well and can be blanched to add flavor in sauces or casseroles.
