Seasons/Availability
Brown Turkey figs are available in early spring through early winter.
Culinary Uses
Brown Turkey figs are best eaten raw or cooked. For raw consumption, look for fruits that are plump and fragrant with darkened flesh and closed eyelets. Brown Turkey figs can be preserved by drying them out in the sun or using an oven. Dried figs offer a unique nutty flavor. For cooking, choose ripe fruit that is slightly soft to the touch and has slightly darkened skin to use in pies, jams and jellies, tarts or other baked goods, granola bars, sauces or smoothies. Figs can also grilled alongside meats as a savory side dish. Figs pair well with strong flavors such as balsamic vinegar, blue cheese and walnuts. The soft texture of figs also pairs well with creamy ingredients like yogurt or ice cream for a sweet treat. Brown Turkey figs have a short shelf life – ripe fruit can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two days, whereas unripe fruit can last up to five days. If dried, they can keep for months when stored properly in an airtight container. Enjoy this sweet and nutritious fruit while it’s in season!
