Green Jalapeño chile peppers, botanically part of the Capsicum annuum family, are small to medium-sized pepper variants most commonly known as a “Jalapeño.” The name “Jalapeño” is derived from Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico where they were once grown and sold in large quantities. Green Jalapeño chile peppers have an average heat level of 2,500- 8,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU).

Usage

Green Jalapeño chile peppers are popularly utilized fresh or cooked and can be used across sweet and savory dishes alike. When green, they are often chopped into salsas, sprinkled over tacos and burritos, stuffed with cheese and other fillings, cooked into egg dishes, or pickled. They can also be grilled and served as a side dish or added to pizza or sandwiches. Green Jalapeño chile peppers will keep up to one week when stored in the refrigerator. When mature, the pepper will turn bright red and can be dried and ground into powder for spicier dishes or used as an essential ingredient in hot sauces.

Nutritional Value

Green Jalapeño chile peppers are an excellent source of vitamins A and C, potassium, dietary fiber, folate, iron, magnesium and phosphorus. They also contain capsaicin which is known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
