Seasons/Availability

Edamame is available year-round frozen. Fresh beans and pods are available in the summer.

Pods are also available dried.

Storage

Fresh Edamame should be stored in a cool and dry place, such as the refrigerator, for up to 5 days. If still attached to its branches, it is important to keep the pods in an upright position with stems facing downward. After cooking, Edamame should be stored airtight at room temperature for up to 4 days. Frozen beans should be stored in the freezer for up to 6 months. Dried Edamame pods can also be stored for a few weeks at room temperature or 1 year in the pantry, although the flavor will start to diminish after about 8 weeks. All types of Edamame can be sealed in an airtight container and stored in the fridge or freezer for longer periods of time.

Preparation and Use

The pods of Edamame should be washed before use to remove dirt and debris. The pods can be cooked in a variety of ways, including steaming, boiling, roasting, or sautéing. Once cooked and cooled down, the beans should be removed from their pods with fingertips or a fork, and served as-is or in salads, soups, or stir-fries. Edamame can also be mashed into a paste for use in dips, spreads, sauces and desserts.

Dried pods can be reconstituted by soaking them overnight before cooking. The beans are often cooked with salt to enhance the flavor.
