Seasons/Availability
Kumato tomatoes are available year-round.
Selection
When selecting Kumato tomatoes, look for those that are nearly dark brown in color and have no green patches. Avoid tomatoes with any signs of mold or decay.
Storage
Kumato tomatoes should be stored at room temperature away from direct sunlight, and will keep for about 1 week when stored properly. They can also be refrigerated, though it is not recommended as the cold air will cause them to lose some of their flavor and texture. To freeze them, slice the tomatoes into thin slices before freezing on a parchment-lined baking sheet; once frozen, transfer to an airtight container or freezer bag and use within 3 months for best results.
Nutritional Value
Kumato tomatoes are a good source of vitamins A, C, and K, as well as potassium. They are also high in dietary fiber and contain antioxidants such as carotenoids.
Applications
Kumato tomatoes can be used in any recipe that calls for tomatoes; they make an excellent addition to salads or sandwiches, and their natural sweetness makes them ideal for use in sauces or condiments. They can also be roasted or grilled for added depth of flavor. Kumato tomatoes can also be eaten fresh out of hand; their sweet, complex flavor is delicious when enjoyed on its own.
