White Pearl onions, botanically classified as Allium ampeloprasum, are small members of the Amaryllidaceae family. They are also known as baby or pearl onions and vary in color from ivory and pale yellow to white. There are many varieties of White Pearl onions grown throughout the world, including Tokyo Long White, Crystal Wax, Red Baron, and Southport Yellow Globe. The most popular variety grown is called Parisienne Pearl which is a round onion that averages two centimeters in diameter with a white-yellow hue.
Storage
Fresh White Pearl onions should be stored in a cool, dry area away from direct sunlight for up to 1 week. Once cooked, they can be stored refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 5 days. They can also be frozen for prolonged storage.
Applications
White Pearl onions are ideal for roasting, braising, sautéing, or grilling. They can also be boiled and pickled or added to salads, casseroles, and soups. They pair well with garlic, thyme, rosemary, parsley, olive oil, bacon fat, buttery sauces, honey glazes., apple cider vinegar and other vegetables such as potatoes and squash. White Pearl onions can be used as a topping on burgers and sandwiches or included in salsas and chutneys. The bulbs can also be utilized to make cocktails such as Pear Martini’s by muddling and straining the juice.
Nutrition
White Pearl onions are an excellent source of vitamin C and provide vitamins A, B6, thiamin, niacin, folate, iron, potassium and calcium. They also contain dietary fiber and small amounts of protein.
