Seasons/Availability
Shallots are available year-round.
Current Facts
Shallots, botanically classified as Allium cepa var. aggregatum, are members of the Amaryllidaceae family and a relative of onions, garlic, chives, scallions, and leeks. The name “shallot” is derived from the French word “shalot” which was used to describe an elongated-shaped onion variety grown in France during the Middle Ages. There is some confusion regarding its origin since shallots are thought to be native to India or China with records indicating that it was first introduced in Europe by traders during the Roman Empire and later exported to other parts of the world.
Nutritional Value
Shallots are an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and E, as well as a good source of calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, and iron. They are also high in dietary fiber and contain antioxidant compounds that help protect the body from free radical damage.
Applications
Shallots can be consumed raw or cooked and used in place of onions or garlic in many recipes. To prepare fresh Shallots for use, start by peeling off the papery skin covering the bulb. Cut off any bruised portions and slice thinly to release their pungent flavor. Raw Shallots can be added to salads or salsas for a mild onion-like flavor. Cooked Shallot slices can be sautéed in olive oil or butter until golden brown and used as a side dish. Shallots can also be diced and added to soups, stews, and stir-fries for a sweet onion taste. When baking or roasting vegetables, add some chopped Shallots to the mix for an aromatic flavor. Additionally, roasted Shallot halves are great served as an accompaniment to roasted meats.
Shallots should be stored in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and humidity. If kept properly sealed in an airtight container, they will keep fresh for up to two weeks. Dried Shallot powder is also available commercially in stores and online for longer shelf life. To preserve their flavor and aroma it is best to use them soon after purchase as their flavor will gradually fade over time.
Shallots are a versatile and widely used ingredient in many dishes worldwide and can be a delicious addition to any meal. They not only provide great flavor, but also offer an array of health benefits that make them a nutritious and beneficial food choice. Whether fresh or dried, Shallots are an excellent way to add depth of flavor to your recipes.
