Turmeric is native to Southern Asia and India. It is a member of the ginger family and its scientific name is Curcuma longa. Turmeric has been used for thousands of years in Eastern medicine, cuisine, dyeing fabrics, and as a religious symbol. The powder of Turmeric has the distinction of being known as Indian saffron due to its brilliant yellow-orange color.

Nutritional Value

Turmeric contains vitamins C, B6, manganese and dietary fiber; it also has anti-inflammatory properties and helps improve digestion.

Storage Tips

Whole turmeric can be stored in an airtight container in a cool dark place for up to six months. Powdered turmeric should be stored in a sealed container and kept away from direct sunlight.

Applications

Turmeric is most often associated with Indian cuisine and its use as a spice for curries and lentils. It can also be used in pickles, sauces, marinades, salad dressings, soups, stews and teas. Turmeric can also be enjoyed as an ingredient in drinks such as Golden Milk or Turmeric Lattes. Its vibrant color makes it a desirable dye for fabrics.
