Orange Valencia

Seasons/Availability

Valencia oranges are available in spring through summer.

Selection

When choosing Valencia oranges, look for firm fruit that is heavy in comparison to its size. The skin should be smooth, thin-skinned, and vibrant orange in color. Avoid oranges with soft spots or splits in the skin, as this indicates decay.

Storage

Valencia oranges can be stored at room temperature but will last longer when refrigerated. If storing in the refrigerator, place them in a plastic bag to retain moisture and keep away from other strong-smelling foods as they can absorb odors easily. They can also be frozen by squeezing out the juice into an ice cube tray and freezing overnight; it’s best to consume within six months of freezing.

Usage

Valencia oranges can be enjoyed either peeled and eaten raw or in recipes. They are commonly used for juicing as their juice contains a high amount of Vitamin C and low acidic content. The juice is also great for adding flavor to salads, smoothies, and cocktails. Valencias are perfect for marmalades, jams, jellies, sorbets, ice creams and other desserts. When cooked with meat dishes such as lamb chops or pork loin, Valencia oranges add sweetness and tangy flavor to the meal. In addition to being eaten raw or cooked with meals, Valencias can also be dried and served as a snack.
