Seasons/Availability
Comice pears are available in the late summer through early spring.
Current Facts
Comice pears, botanically classified as Pyrus communis ‘Doyenné du Comice’, are one of the most popular varieties of European pear and a member of the Rosaceae family. They are believed to have originated in France and were first documented in 1849. The name “Comice” is derived from an old French word meaning “most pleasing,” referring to its unique flavor.
Selection and Storage
When selecting Comice pears, look for those that are yellow-green with blushing on one side, feel heavy for their size, and give slightly when gently pressed near the stem end. Avoid any fruits with soft spots or blemishes. Additionally, Comice pears should not be overly ripe when purchased as they ripen quickly and easily become mushy. It is best to store them in the refrigerator and enjoy within a few days of purchase.
Nutritional Value
Comice pears are an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamins C and K, copper, potassium, manganese, and folate. They also contain antioxidants that have been linked to reducing inflammation, improving immunity, and protecting against oxidative stress-related diseases. A single medium pear provides approximately 100 calories with no fat or cholesterol.
Uses
Comice pears can be eaten raw or cooked into a variety of dishes either sweet or savory. Popular recipes include poaching them in rosemary syrup, combining with apples for a simple tart or crumble, baking in pies and tarts, and blending into smoothies. Comice pears are also great in salads or as a topping for yogurt or oatmeal. They can even be used to make sorbet or homemade ice cream!
The general rule of thumb is that Comice pears should be harvested when they are still firm but ripe; otherwise, they will become overly sweet and may turn soft too quickly. To test for ripeness, lightly press the stem end of the pear with your fingertips – if it yields slightly, then it’s ready to eat. Enjoy!
